Body Language
Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the government for a redress of grievances.
“Body Language” is a series conveying the importance of personal expression coupled with our right to freedom of speech. The series represents a melding of figure fine art and self expression. Each subject was asked for a word that had deep meaning for them, and then the subject posed nude to recreate the letters of the word. Self expression comes in many forms but is often repressed by society through public opinion, outcry, and misguided litigation. Freedom of speech, and by extension freedom of expression, is protected by the First Amendment of the U.S. Constitution and should be held as sacred to our society. The track taken by the project explicitly blends freedom of speech with freedom of expression. The title, "Body Language" conveys the dual meaning of speech and the human form demonstrating that the freedom of speech and the freedom of expression are one and the same.
The Words:
Each subject picked their own words and each word has deeply personal meaning. However, art is about creation and then interpretation. What does each word mean to you? Do you have a word that you would express if you could?
